Why aren’t hay and oats enough?

One of the most common misconceptions in horse care is that hay and some type of raw grain – usually oats or barley – are "plenty enough" for horses. While these have long been traditional and widely used feeds, they do not cover a horse’s full nutritional needs in the long term and can, in some cases, lead to serious deficiencies or reduced performance. Modern feeding practices have clearly shown that a combination of digestible fibers, high-quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and specialized functional ingredients provides the solid foundation on which healthy living and balanced performance are built.

This is why it’s worth choosing a complete, premium horse feed alongside hay and grains – for example, Meglio products, which provide not just energy, but a truly bioavailable nutrient profile.

A horse’s body needs more than just fiber and starch

Hay and oats provide an excellent base, but they are far from complete feed. Hay primarily supplies fiber and minimal protein, while oats provide energy. But what’s missing?

Essential vitamins, vital minerals, trace elements, high-quality protein, oils, and ingredients that support the gut microbiome.

A horse uses energy not only for maintenance, but also for recovery, immune function, muscle building, and overall fitness. For this, the body requires focused nutrients that raw grains simply cannot provide.

The advantages of modern horse feeds – why they matter long-term

High-quality, complete feeds like Meglio products are formulated to include exactly the components that a horse cannot obtain in sufficient amounts from its natural diet alone.

A quality feed:

  • Provides a balanced protein-to-energy ratio
  • Contains a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals
  • Supports healthy gut flora
  • Helps maintain and develop muscles
  • Stabilizes nervous system responses
  • Is gentle on the digestive system
  • Enables more efficient energy utilization than raw grains

Oats and barley are simple starch sources. Horses, however, don’t just perform well on energy alone – they thrive on the finely tuned micronutrients found in modern, functional feeds. Always check the composition and nutritional values carefully.

Grains are not complete nutrition – and often cause problems

Feeding grains can easily lead to:

  • Excessive starch load
  • Imbalance in gut flora
  • Behavioral fluctuations
  • Fermentation in the hindgut
  • Metabolic issues
  • Nutrient deficiencies

While grains provide energy, they contribute almost nothing to the immune system, bones, or muscles.
Over time, a hay + oats combination often results in conditions owners mistakenly consider “normal”:

  • Dull coat
  • Lethargy
  • Weak muscles
  • Increased nervousness
  • Slower recovery
  • Recurring digestive problems

These are not the horse’s “personality” – they are signs of nutrient deficiency.

A horse’s health is a forward-looking decision – and feeding is the foundation

Horses are not designed to handle modern training, competition workloads, or hobby-level activity on hay and grains alone. Their bodies are far more demanding. When a rider provides the right nutritional foundation, the horse can achieve:

  • Better muscle development
  • A stronger immune system
  • Stable digestive function
  • More balanced behavior
  • A longer, healthier lifespan
  • Fewer digestive issues

Complete Meglio feeds provide that extra support which hay and grains alone can never supply.
